    Default Dark Tower audio books

I recently got to listen to all seven of the DT audiobooks and have to say it was really an excellent to revisit the series. It's been a few years since I read 5, 6, and 7 and was surprised at how much of the story I had forgotten. The genius reading of Frank Muller and the almost equally talented George Guidall really bring a sense of realism and I highly suggest you listen to the story in it's entirety, you wont be disappointed.

Agreed. I'm still preferential to Muller though but they both do give good voice to the characters.

The audio version really brought the characters more alive and real to me. Loved Muller on his readings and found myself telling him to stop interrupting the characters.... He did such an awesome job with their voices and I was sad to find out why he couldn't do the final books.

It was so sad that Frank Muller had a motorcycle accident and was unable to continue working, and later passed away. He was an amazing narrator. By far the best I have ever listened to and I feel that his work on the Dark Tower series is the best, and I wish he had been able to do the last 3 books; nothing against George Guidall, but he's just not Frank Muller.

One thing I found amazing was how often I'd be listening to Frank voice a female character and totally forget it was a man reading. His range of voice was incredible too; he didn't just have one "30-50 year old male" voice; he put a lot of effort in making the voices just slightly different from each other in each story. Wizard and Glass is a great example, there's a bunch of people in that book and none of them sound exactly the same.

Seems I take the journey every two years Since the cassettes and CD's were already here, I wanted to see if what Sai King said in his afterwords of Wolves was true:
"audio insists you absorb everything; your hurrying eye ( occasional tired mind) cannot skip so much as a single word. It is complete immersion into Roland's world".
Truer words have never been spoken! Except for the first reading, I have never experienced anything like this. It is awesome.

I just finished my second listen of the series on audiobook. I also prefer Muller but I like both of them. I recently read a blip from an interview with Guidall when he was asked about stepping in and taking over the Dark Tower series for Frank Muller, who many considered the voice of Stephen King books. Guidall talks about how he had been friends with and had worked with Muller for a long time and that stepping into Muller's material helped him feel closer to him.

May I ask in the voice of Roland, is it deep like I'm assuming his voice would be? Listening to audio books is on my list DT junkie list lol.

How many DT books did Muller do? I've heard everyone rave about him so I've started looking on e-bay for the old Muller versions. I picked up Gunslinger on cassette and just listened to a couple minutes of it and it sounds like it's going to be awesome. The cassettes are a little bit of a pain but I'll manage.

I wish on Library on the SK website, they would list the deleted out of print editions so if I want to hunt for something on ebay (like the original Gunslinger audiobook), I know what exists. On the Library site, when there is a new edition of a book (say the 1990 expanded The Stand for instance), there is no mention of the old edition.

Muller recorded the first four books of the series. Stephen King talks about this in the afterword after Wolves of the Calla. When he was in the process of writing the final books he had approached Muller about doing the audio-books and he was on board. Then he had his tragic accident. George Guidall finished the last three books of the series and when King released the revised version of The Gunslinger, Guidall did the audio on that. So as far as commercially available audio-books now - books 1,5,6 and 7 are George Guidall. Books 2 through 4 are Frank Muller.

BTW - great avatar picture. I got to see Roger Waters performing The Wall last fall and it was probably the best concert I have ever seen.

I would strongly encourage you to check out Muller's work - he did a lot of King's books - Shawshank Redemption, Black House, Green Mile to name a few. He also read for quite a few John Grisham novels. With most audio book readers, I think it just sounds like someone doing different voices. With Muller, it felt like you were listening to actual characters.

I was looking on the library and I think the only Muller Dark Tower that was redone (because of the updated version I assume) was The Gunslinger. I think the rest of his are still in print. I didn't see an audiobook listing on the Library for Nightmares & Dreamscapes but I'm sure there was one. Does that just mean it's out of print?
