Would you go insane? would you let the hotel take control of you?
If I was Jack I wouldn't try stop drinkingAt the end I would let myself be consumed by the evil forces and then kill everyone around

I'd like to think I could stand up to it, but if both Jack and Grady failed, who knows...
Jack never really had a "choice". His "illness" set him up from the get-go...
I don't think Jack had a choice. Maybe if he tried to beat his disease somewhere else..... Perhaps. But the combination of the evil that was there and the disease he wasn't really ready to fight were too much for a mere mortal. Don't forget, it didn't have the same effect on Wendy or Danny. True evil knows who to target and how to do it.
Jack lost sight of what he was really wanting to do...be a good father. He was trying to prove his worth to his friend and didnt and could leave when he should have. I'm sure the same thing would have happen to me but prolly quicker.
Yes I agree that Jack really had no choice in the matter. He was a weak recovering alcoholic that was always at the brink of relapse, even without ghosts egging him on. He almost conquered the spirits when he had the chance to get the snowmobile going, but that would have cut the story short by a few hundred pages I suppose. Poor Jack, felt bad when they made him beat his face to a pulp.
I think the Hotel chose Jack when he got there for the interview. you know like the hotel controls who the next care taker wil be. i think the same thing would happen to me as well
i'm not sure if the hotel could actually choose its next caretaker, otherwise, it'd have tried again each and every year: there are billions of addicts of all sorts who need a 'lucky break', it could lure any number of them: i think it chose whoever was weak that was around it.
remember, it wanted to use danny even more, it used jack only to get to danny.
jack was, sadly, inconsequential: a tool, only, to get at and weaken the pot of gold, danny.
on jack it fed and stayed 'alive'...but on danny, it would LIVE and thrive.
i'm not sure the key is alcoholism alone, but severe addiction: it's the key upon which the evil can turn and open that weaker soul.
but it is what is on the other side, that prize, that it works thru the addict to get at.
I would probably go insane, but I would use the insanity to my advantage. I would set up guitar amplifier stacks and a drum set in the middle of the Colorado Lounge and rock out all winter long. I would challenge the ghosts in the Gold Room to a Battle of the Bands...and I would win due to sheer volume. By May the 1st,
