    Default Should I keep going?

Ok, well, I have read the first two books in the series, and I picked up some other books and have tried to get back into this one. I can't seem to do it.... Something about it... I have heard some of the forum members talk about how the Dark Tower series connects to the other books in so many ways, and makes them more enjoyable. As soon as I finish Skeleton Crew, I'm debating wheater or not to pick this back up. I have a feeling most of you will tell me to stick with it, but does it get better? Is the series worth sticking it out? I want to read on, but I can't get very far without wanting to go into another book... Can someone "open my eyes" to the greatness of this? I liked the Drawing of the Three, but the Gunslinger not so much.

i enjoyed it, but i have an edifice complex, so there you go. i wouldn't knock yourself out over it. it either does for you or it doesn't. what'd you think of book 2? you liked it. why'd you like it? what was you favorite part of that story? aren't those things enough to entice you to read on, want more?

Book 4 was my favorite of the series until the last 5 or 6 pages of #7. It's worth the read but don't force yourself.

    Hi,

As you predicted, I'm gonna say to stick with it and, yes, it does get better (although I thought it was pretty darn good long before that) but if you liked Drawing I can't understand why you're not getting into Waste Lands, give it another go!

    Long days and pleasant nights

You really must keep going with it. I struggled with parts of the series but then I found a point where I couldn't put it down.

Many found the Gunslinger a difficult/slow read- as it is different than the typical SK book. Yes, I will ask you to continue reading the books. Think of it more like a journey. An adventure, quest of Roland and his Ka-Tet. IMHO it does get better and I think you may eventually feel it a life changing journey. You will be drawn into each character, each new adventure- so much so that you become part of the Ka_Tet. It is also true to many of SK books have connections to the Dark Tower. Lots of "wow" moments as you read them. Guess, what I am saying is, please do keep reading as you are in for a special treat.

Yankees - Don't sweat it. IMHO you gave it a good shot with two books. I had the same problem with Lord of the Rings. Just couldn't get into hit no matter how much I read or how much others told me of its greatness. Read what you like and try it again in a couple years.....

The Waste Lands picks up quite a bit, idk where you are so far in the book, but I'd certainly stick with it if I were you. And it does get better, it just starts off kind of slow.

I'm not surprised that you would prefer The Drawing of the Three to The Gunslinger. I felt much the same way when I first read these, long and many years ago. I didn't find very much to like about Roland then, and frankly, never really did come around very much to his odd, obssesive behavior. But the saga is rife with the kind of characters you're probably used to meeting, if you've read very much of Mr. King's work, and I would encourage you to take the next step on the journey, at the very least, and see how you like The Wastelands. I think you will find as you go that the rest of the series moves rather far away from the grim, stark, dead dustiness of The Gunslinger into something much more vivid and rich in both story-telling and character devlopment. I'm not going to tell you it is the world's quintessential magnum opus (although I have no doubt someone around here will ), but it's well worth your time if you give it a chance.

I can tell you that the first time I read I didn't like The Gunslinger so much either. But It's a vital part of the story, and if you liked The Drawing of the Three, read along because you'll surely love the others.
