    Smile L.T.'s theory of pets

I'm the one of King's fan. His works have inspired me to develop my English skills. In my country, the one who can use English well, every good job will come to them. The list below is King's work that was read by me:

The Shining, The different season, It, 1408, The mist, Misery

Now, I am reading "LT's theory of Pets" and there are any verses that I can't understand even accompanying with lots of Dictionaries.

    1. You just never know when you're going to bust a fiddle-string.
    2. You will always be my little maple duff and sugar dumpling.
    3. A broken spoon may become a fork.

    What does the bold mean?

Please, somebody explain that meaning to me.

    Thanks a lot,

    1. To me meant, "lose control" or "go off track"...
    2. These are simply "pet" names or affectionate nicknames given to a loved one("pet" name is kind of ironic given the story title)
    3. Never really got that one myself, other than that something can be remade or "reborn" into something else useful...

    I also found your comment

rather interesting, since speaking English in the U.S. these days doesn't guarantee you a darn thing...

bust a fiddle string means to break one of the strings of a violin while playing. In this context its a saying that means "be prepared".

the second phrase is a sweet treat, a type of desert. In the southern US especially it is common to use the names of foods, especially sweet foods as terms of affection.

    1. I think he means to die. In the south, where i'm from, it means to have a heart attack. I think in the story he says that, a few sentences over.
    2. Like GNTLGNT said. Affectionant, pet names
    3. I think LT's wife took it to mean; a tunning fork. Or a fork that makes a musical note. In order to make a fork from a spoon, you have to remove pieces from the spoon. Hence, her leaving LT.
