Default How to fix the DT series with one short story or novella.

Spoilers about so **** ya if ya read ahead.

So now you've read the DT series, here's how I'd fix it with one short novel. The book would be called trumpets of gilead or something like that. It would be set in the time of one of Roland's grandfathers.

He would be the one to battle the CK at the tower imprisoning him there. Before that they would get word from a breaker who in those times would be more like beam and portal monitors that the CK was attacking say the portal of the dog directly.

They'd have the manni whip up a controlled thinny, thwart the CK using the dog guardian and chase him back along the path to the tower have a massive battle where he would be trapped after killing Rolands great granddad or some such.

The conclusion would be of a prophecy which foretold the defeat of the CK in the manner that is done in book 7. Maybe it would come to Roland's great grandmother as she gave birth or something for tensions sake. That way you could get the epic battles that were missing, and portend the lame ass ending as required by ka and not just jazzing it up and calling it "art".

The series as it stands has no Plennor Fields, it has no epic duel it's only slow downward spiral after book 4 into mediocrity. There's no great stand and this is like depriving gunslingers of more than their trigger fingers you sapped their very essence for being away. Anyway I'll move along now and shut my fat mouth.

Nah, don't shut yer trap-we all(O.K., just me)run off at the lip...your concept is interesting, but even though I was cheesed at the way the DT series ended, I eventually saw the genius in it...

So where would your short novel come in the current sequence of books?

That's cool, different strokes. Obviously the man himself knew there were massive gaps and problems with the story line or he wouldn't have cleaned up the first book in an attempt to white wash over them.

A few generations before Stephen Deschain was born. There's no definitive time for when the CK was imprisoned. It also gives an excuse to show Giliead in it's prime, the Manni folk as more than just a loose affiliation, could redeem those with the ability to break the beam and open up the ability to explore other portals and guardians. Seems like it would lend itself naturally as even a bridge to the wonderful Eyes of the Dragon.

Yep but I meant was where in the sequence of books would you place it. Would it be written to be read before Gunslinger?

It would have to follow the originals. In the parlance of Star Wars think more Old Republic than the abhorrent prequels. That way Roland and company's adventure would stay as is and not require any changes, but the areas that are so anticlimactic could be explained better as to why they turned out the way they did via backstory. Instead of sighs of frustration and angst when people would reread the series, like so many fans do, the final tome could shed light why things are the way they are. I mean take the wimpy death of Flagg. As a subplot or side story you could have him be cursed by a woman he'd toyed with and who turned to magic to curse him to die in a manner that fits the events with Mordred, only with some cleverly portentous verbiage. Doing it that way frees up having to do reedits like the 2003 gunslinger revisions that only urked the loyal long timer readers like myself. That **** was the equivalent of Han shooting after Greedo.

Another thought is this book 8 could be a collection of short stories ala little sisters of eluria & everythings eventual that help to strengthen the bonds between the talisman/black house, eyes of the dragon connections. One of those stories could cover the corruption of the CK since it's alluded to he's of the line of eld he could be the gggrand dad that get's corrupted by the tower and imprisoned for of all things forgetting the face of his father and losing his equivalent to the horn. I honestly could think of a bunch of neat ways to play with the macroverse and make it fit. I truly hate using Tolkienesque examples but something like the book of lost tales or a Silmarillion type tome would be way to give the series a sense of completion that as it is now just isn't there.
