Default Hardback editions and The Gunslinger revised version

Hi all, been a long time since posting on these boards since I've taken a break from reading King's work, but after recently coming back and reading Carrie for the first time, I'm hooked with big claws once again.

I purchased a hardback collection a while ago and within that were the Hodder + Stoughten editions of the V and VII books in the Dark Tower collection. I intend on saving reading this series, as I have done thus far, since I have a hunch it will be one of the best and most favored reading experiences I'll have, but to do justice for when I start reading them I'd like them in hardback. Having glanced through, I saw some wonderful illustrations and I'd really like to have the rest of the editions complete in the same vein. However, I can't seem to find of the earlier Dark Tower books being published by H+S? Aside from annoying the OCD part of my personality, it'd upset me knowing the other books don't have the illustrations. Could anyone direct me to hardback editions of the Dark Tower series that are complete with the illustrations as seen in the H+S books? And am I right in thinking the earlier books aren't to be found by H+S in hardback?

If I can't find those editions, I've stumbled onto the hardcover of The Gunslinger I'd like to purchase first, (http://images.booksamillion.com/cove...0670032549.jpg), but after reading it's a revised edition I'd like to hear some thoughts on the changes. Is it a major difference and does it spoil from the original? And am I able to find a copy of this in hardback without paying ridiculous money?

I'd also really like this hardback edition of The Stand, (http://larryfire.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/stand.jpg), or is that where the cost seems to skyrocket? I don't suppose I could find one on a "constant reader" budget?

If anyone has any recommendations for buying hardback editions other than eBay or Amazon I'm all ears.

(P.S. I've narrowed down to which book I'll start reading next to Dolores Claiborne, Pet Sematary, The Long Walk, Needful Things and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. These are the only ones that seem an appropriate size for my lunch break at work, so vote for the one I should go for. )

    Hi,

Yes, it's high time Hodder produced a quality hardback edition of DT (hint, hint).

But don't let that put you off reading the amazing journey that is DT - start it now! You won't regret it, honest.

    Long days and pleasant nights

    Anton,

Check on E-bay for hardcover editions of The Dark Tower series. I found the first four on there from Viking Press and paid about $25 for each, give or take a few dollars. You have to do some searching to find some good buys. Some sellers charge a fortune for unsigned King hardcovers, while others are more reasonable in price.

hi. i read the the seven stories about roland several times before i realized the gunslinger that i read was a revised edition...just saying...so, with that in mind, i did pick up a copy of the original gunslinger and read that when it seemed appropriate. but what am i thinking?...you don't want to know what i know, at least, not now, not if you haven't read any of them as yet. the revised is there for a reason and if sk saw fit to revise the original, i'd start with that one and after you get to the end of the seventh, then maybe find the original and see the difference....there is a difference.

give the long walk or needful things a shot...

I don't think the first three DT novels were ever published in the UK in hardcover. There is a boxed paperback set of the first four available, though:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dark-Tower-B...7818514&sr=8-5

This set is kind of neat in that the covers (both hardcover and paperback) all tie together--the Tower is small in volume one, but grows as the books progress until it looms over the viewer in DT VII.

DTIV was published in a hardcover signed limited edition of 500 copies. This is pretty expensive if you can even find one.

I've found a DT Hardback collection in the US, with the first four books as Viking editions and the last three as Grant editions; the books are $100 but the shipping to over here in the UK is $75.

As off-putting as that is I'm still tempted, these things are hard to come by over in the UK. Should I take the plunge?

Well, I bit the bullet and spent the $175... they arrived last week.
