If you could learn any language...

We're looking at studying a language together as a family, so I've been thinking about this a lot. We're restricted by what teachers are available here, and what programs we can afford, etc. But, I started wondering what people would choose if there were no limitations?

If you could wake up tomorrow fluently speaking an additional language, what would you choose? And why that one? What does it mean to you?

It would be Spanish-I'm a nurse and work in a state correctional facility where there is a large segment of the population that speaks it as their primary language. It would make sick call a lot simpler-not having to wait for an interpreter, AND to know that IS what was said-instead of through the "filter" of a translator. Plus, so much of the population is now Hispanic, if I leave corrections-I still would love to be fluent...that and I could order Huveos Rancheros at my fave Mexican eatery, with the proper flair and emphasis...

Okay... I'm currently teaching myself German (Austrian dialect) and have learned some Russian (and will go back to it when the German is stronger). If I could learn another language overnight? Latin baby, Latin. Dead language or not, I still think it is pretty cool.

I do have plans to learn five languages other than English. It costs the same to dream big as it does to dream small, so why not?

I have studied Russian, off and on, for many years. I can read it and speak enough to get by as a struggling tourist in Moscow, but am nowhere close to being fluent. I always ignored Spanish, because so many people are fluent in both English/Spanish. They are a dime a dozen in Texas.

That being said, if I could wake up tomorrow speaking another language fluently, I would choose Spanish. Spanish would be more valuable than Russian in the coming conflicts.

I know some Spanish and would love to be fluent in it, but if I could wake up knowing a new language, it would have to be ASL (American Sign Language). It looks like such a beautiful language, and my deaf patients wouldn't need translators

I would learn Spanish because it's practical and useful. But I agree with Ladypain about Latin, it would be really cool to know Latin!

Well, as for me, languages are my profession. Now I speak two languages fluently - Russian and English. I also know French.
I'd like to learn Spanish very much, because I like this language, I like the way it sounds. I have even started to learn Spanish, but so far it's no good, I hope I'll be able to learn it in future.
Also if I could choose any language to learn, I would choose Greek. Because I love Greece and its language - it's very interesting and unusual. It would be interesting to learn it.
