I actually picked up 'On Writing', along with the companion book, 'Secret Windows: Essays and Fiction on the Craft of Writing', last month at a yard sale. A buck each (sorry you didn't get a cut of that Stephen). Friday night, I started to read 'On Writing' and couldn't put it down until my eyes just wouldn't stay open a second longer. I got halfway through it that night.
Saturday evening, June 19th, I picked it up again. It was coming close to midnight when I was nearing the end. I get to the section where Stephen is going to talk about his accident. I freaked out when I read the date of the accident was June 19th* and so I was sitting there reading on the same exact date, only 11 years later. I felt like something magical happened! Talk about writer/reader telepathy!
Besides that great little bend in time, this was a fantastic book. I learned so much about the craft of writing. I plan on sending this book to my niece, who will be leaving in a few months to fly across the pond to England for a year to get her Master's in Creative Writing. This will be her assigned summer reading from her auntie!
*No, I'm not the fan that has all pertinent SK dates locked in my memory.
