I belive that the car as a portal was dead but if he were to rebuid the thing then it could and would be a awsome ride for I am an old buick fan. I grew up going to carshows with my dad and grand dad, uncles too. they all had a toy of some sort. but regardless I belive it would live on in another.

Im sorry to those of you who think that most of SR King's books sould be a movie or some sort of showing but I Have to agree with what I had read In some older post's that of the tower serise if you put a face to a caricture then you would lose you'r own personal view and imagination for the glorious things that they are.

I liked a Buick 8. Especially when the weird creatures were coming out of the trunk. I also like when they got a sense of the world that the creatures came from. It was like the mist but with a car. It would make a good movie. Character actors should flock to it.

My take on the ending was this.

SK in the story compared it to a creature trapped in an enclosed space, with the air running out. To me, the car was a portal between the two worlds, limited to a very narrow scope- the shed (or wherever the car was sitting), and the area of world in the other dimension- as evidenced by the beetles, sea, plant life etc that Sandy saw looking into the portal. People who vanished from the shed had remains found within that small area.

The end of the book references them waiting out, and that it has been showing less frequent and intense incidents over the years. In fact, Wilcox even references that they should just wait it out rather than blow it wide open.

The fact that the self repairing vehicle has a visible crack is showing that this is indeed happening. However, the reader is left with no timetable for this, as it could be another 10, 100 years for it to break down completely. The car is still very much capable of surprises, and Troop D if they should remain in possession of it will need to be wary at all times as the car still is in posession of great powers.
