I thought the back story made completely sense with the reason why all of the sudden she kicks him in such a way...it was like she was waking up from those nightmarish moments and finally took her life in her hands, maybe a bit or surely overdoing it, but going ahead in the story she recognized that she would have lived a different life if only she overcame that event sooner.
IMO the back story was the trigger, no doubts about that.

    Default excuse my french... but

Look...Kids...Gerald's Game is a TOUGH READ. DEAL WITH IT...
    That said...
I KNOW that Dolores Claiborne is the bloody briliant it doesn't hold my attention...HOWEVER....ONE DAY...I WILL READ IT...and I know you WANNA WHY???

Reading about how any strong willed woman DEALS with her "SITUATION" will inspire likewise action.

I have other opinions....I'll share them eventually

I admit that I also thought the molestation scene was a little too graphic. The whole time I had a look on my face as if I were smelling a rotting piece of steak.

However, I feel it is very necessary and relevant to the rest of the story. I think that if she hadn't conjured up those images again, she would have simply been content dying handcuffed to those bedposts.

i just finished this book today...what a freaky book! i first bought this book years ago, but i couldn't finish it because when it started getting to the incest situation, i couldn't go on. i don't really like reading stuff about that. when i started reading it again, i just wanted to find out what happens to jessie, does she die there handcuffed, or escapes(how?), or gets rescued(how)? so i continued on, trying not to peak at the end of the book to find out what happened. then enter the space cowboy, that's what really freaked me out, was he real or not? so i finished it to the end, & actually felt like crying w/relief! i have to agree w/ bluespider above, if that event hadn't happened in her childhood, she would've had a different reaction to her handcuffed situation & there wouldn't be anything to read about, there'd be no book. so cheers to SK!! another brilliant book, and scary! after reading about the space cowboy, i was jumpy in the middle of the night when i had to get up to go to the bathroom & had to turn on all the lights so there wouldn't be any shadows! now on to my next book, Dolores Claiborne, although i have read it before, i don't remember alot, it's been a long while.
