I mentioned previously that my grandmother owns all of Stephen Kings books, but I remember the Christmas that my aunt bought her the VHS copy of IT (the movie) she gave me a summary of why it was scary because I did not believe her at the time. Here is what she told me, that thinking about it now after reading the book is a very interesting idea.
Pennywise and the Spider were two separate beings. Meaning that Pennywise was the true form, and he would kill the children to feed to the spider. I happen to think this is or would be better ending to the novel, because couldn't it work both ways?
It said at the end of the book that none of the 7 kids ever got together again after their battle with IT, because IT held their bond together. We could just believe that with the spider dead, Pennywise wouldn't have any other reason to kill kids anymore. Until they returned 30 years later. That's why the encountered Pennywise again after the dinner. It's just a thought but I think this could also work for a remake of the film which was supposedly in the works, because it's basically the same just perhaps a bit eerier.

Love the book the way it is but for a creepy twist in a new film adoption it sounds really cool.
