Here is two, and we still hear them all the time:

    - I`m sorry
    - I love you

People keep saying that non-stop, it`s become such a habit like saying " Hi " or " What`s up ", even though the meaning is much, much deeper, it should be anyway, not just something you throw out there......

I never say those words unless I really mean it.

I know that`s not what you are looking for, Sigmund, but to me, those are lost words as well...they are overused and poeple`s heart is not really there when they say it.

Hence, those are the forgotten words, most of the time...at least to me.

How about Whilst? I see that in books all the time, but I've never heard anyone say it except in poetry.

Great idea for a thread. I have a friend who is fond of using obsolete and obscure words. Also he likes using colorful words you would associate with the wild west. He will say stuff like "take a powder". Other favorites are "flim-flammed" and "bamboozled".

I seem to recall a former D.C. politician about 10 years ago who got in trouble for using the word "niggardly". It means frugal or miserly but he got in trouble because others thought it was a racial slur.

Your "dame" comment reminded me that my friend sometimes refers to women as "broads".

See my "The Cigarette and The Secret" story.

"By Cracky!", (but "buy crack" is still in the lexicon-sadly enough)
