Default New Stephen King podcast --Kingcast

    Hello:

I've just published the first episode of The Kingcast, a podcast about Stephen King. I talk about the story and the film of Dolan's Cadillac.

If you're interested, check it out at: http://thekingcast.ca/site

Default Request for help -- drawing / illustration

    Hi all:

I'd like to spiff up the web site and iTunes presentation of my SK podcast "The Kingcast." Since I doubt even Ms. Mod could get him to fly to Ottawa for a photo shoot with me, I have an idea:

    * Is there anyone out there who has some talent as an artist? Patrick Danville would be nice, but I'll take what I can get for free -- I'd like a line drawing of King, possibly with a microphone in the drawing. Should be something that I could crop down to use as a thumbnail, but also attractive in a larger format. Something like this is the general idea I had: http://www.julielawrenceart.com/imag...StevenKing.gif

I'd appreciate any help and credit the artist. All I want is the right to use it on my website and as a podcast identifier.

    Thanks in advance!

Default Therrrre's NO vinism like CHAUvinism...

    But seriously folks.

I'm thinking about an episode of the Kingcast that would deal with "King's women." There's a fairly broad range of "stock" women characters that exist in King's work, I think.

    Negative types:
    * Crazy-ass fat fundamentalist evil woman (Margaret White, Sylvia Pittston, Mrs. Carmody, Mabel Werts to an extent);
    * Slut who can be narcissistic and vicious: Rebecca Vilas (Black House), Ruthie Crockett (Salem's), Julie Lawry (Stand), Nancy Voss (Tommyknockers), Laverne "The Raft."
    * Monstrous female: Christine, IT, Mia, Annie Wilkes, Sara Tidwell, Perse.
    * Grasping mother figure, often also fat: (Eddie & Henry Dean's mother, Myra Kasbrak, Sonia Kasbrak...
    * Nagging wife: Vicky Horton ("Children of the Corn", Lina Hagstrom (WP of the Gods), Mrs. Norton in Salem's Lot, LT's wife, Liz Garfield (Hearts in Atlantis), Mary Willingham (You know they got..)

    Positive types:
    * the beauty in danger (Rose McClendon, Susan Delgado, Mattie Devore, Susan Norton, Sophie in Black House, Alice in Cell, Leigh in Christine, Selena St. George, Bev Rogan and Audra Denbrough in IT...)
    * the female heroine: Susannah Dean, Dolores Claiborne, Carol Gerber, Jo Noonan, Donna Trenton, Cynthia Smith, Charlie McGee, Frannie Goldsmith, Alice in Cell...

What am I missing here? Are there "archetypal" King women I haven't captured here?

Also, I'm thinking that King's appreciation of his female characters has deepened over the years. A number of early critics called him a chauvinist or a misogynist, and in some cases tarred the horror genre as misogynist by definition. I think that's not right, but I also think he has worked hard to write stronger, deeper, more nuanced female characters as he's gone on.

    Questions that I'm thinking about:

    * Do King's critics pick and choose their points of feminist criticism?

    * Are there weaknesses in characters such as Susannah Dean or Dolores Claiborne that disqualify them as heroes?

    * Are too many of King's female characters dependent on men for their own successes? (Thinking here of Rose in Rose Madder, Cynthia in Desperation, Susannah)

Thoughts? I'll promise to credit input where it seems appropriate.

Default New episode of The Kingcast is up

Hi all: the third episode of my podcast The Kingcast is up. This episode talks about how SK treats writers and artists, and the act of writing or creating art, in his works, from Misery to Dark Half to Dark Tower to The Road Virus Heads North to Duma Key. You can find the episode via iTunes or go to The Kingcast website. I also have a comment line if you want to leave an audio comment

Default New Kingcast - Developmental disabilities in Stephen King's work

I've posted episode 4 of the Kingcast. This episode has a promo for the Stephen King Fancast, another SK podcast done by Matt Jacobs, a promo for "Stephen's Empire", and a discussion of how characters with developmental disabilities are treated in King's work.

You can find it on the Kingcast website or subscribe through iTunes.

New episode of "The Kingcast" is up, featuring my new logo, thanks to illustrator Colin White:

    Attachment 10239
And an interview with JP Scott, the director of the first (maybe second, depending on who wins his debate with Mick Garris) feature-length "Dollar Baby" film version of "Everything's Eventual."

Grab it on the Web site or subscribe via iTunes. Feedback is always welcome.

Default "Bag of Bones", Nicole Christian, and podcast

    Hi all:

I'm meeting Nicole Christian on Sunday to chat about her song "Barn Dance". There's another thread on the forum about her. In a nutshell, she's a big King fan, loves "Bag of Bones", and decided to write "Barn Dance" using the fragmentary lyrics in the novel. SK was kind enough to allow her to use the lyrics, so now she has a co-writing credit with the man himself.

My next episode of the Kingcast will be about Bag of Bones. It's one of my favorite novels, and the interview with Nicole will be part of it.

You can hear the song on Nicole's Myspace page. And if you have questions or thoughts you'd like to hear on the episode, let me know here.

You are signed up for the sk.com Newsletter and visit the Home page of the site often, right?

BTW, as you've now noticed, I've tried to combine all your threads about your podcast into this one and changed the thread title to reflect a more generic heading. I thought that would make it easier on everyone to make sure they've got all the news in one place.
