Wasn't she going to kill Paul, though?

Maybe Annie was psychologically in a better place of her life while married. Still probably crazy by most standards, just not homicidal. The marriage ended, and she slipped back into her old habits, became fixated on her favorite romance novelist, etc.

I agree with the idea that she was truly in love with him....
However, I have studied serial killers in great detail (although it was quite a few years ago)..
Instead of what "we" understand to be love...what Anne may have felt for her husband was awe, or fear.
Perhaps she enjoyed power over him...much as she had over Paul!
His escape from her was fortunate for him, but in her mind, she may still hold power over him, thus letting him live.
