Why is it called Captain Trips?

Several possibilities (aren't there infinite ones?), but I'm going with the last Wikipedia entry that refers to Jerry Garcia.

It's better than "Scooter" don't ya think?, but other than the obvious "Dead" tip of the joint-I always imagine it as "tripping" off the mortal coil once and for all. Once "Captain Trips" meets you, you're pretty much insured of being the wheelman of a brass handled race car...

I love the Grateful Dead (especially the late Jerry Garcia! although i thought Pig Pen also had his own brand of charm). Didn't know the Captain Trips reference though.
