Okay men, so I have a friend who got engaged, SHE asked HIM.
I was talking with a very close male friend of mine, we might as well just date each other and get it over with LOL. ANYWAY he was saying how the woman should never ask the man it's just not done.

So it got me thinking what do other men think? Should the woman never ask?

I must say I think it's odd when the woman asks. I would NEVER do that.

I voted yes because I interpreted your question as "is it okay for the woman to ask." Re-reading your post, I think I goofed. In response to "should the woman never ask?" I think the answer is "no," she should never not ask...

Anyway, how I feel is that if a woman finds the man she loves and wants to marry him, she should feel free to ask for that commitment. If the man is worth her time, he'll be proud that she asked.

If the woman has to ask...that means the man does not want to ask. We must ask ourselves why that is ??? Hmmmm, because he doesn't want to marry her!!!!!!! I would never want a girl to ask me. It would 1. put me in a bad situation in which I would have to figure a way to politely say NO and somehow allow her to keep her dignity or 2. upset me that she was not patient enough to allow me to get around to doing it myself (kinda ruin the whole thing). I would never advise a female to ask for a hand in marriage...unless of course they were a lesbian.

That's to say she started talking about marriage and kids and since we both wanted them we decided to take the plunge

It depends on the situation. Sometimes if the bloke hasn't asked yet it might mean that he never will, or it might mean that he just needs a push.
