You are so right the author has an extraordinary way with words. I read the book when I read that Mr. King said that he did not re-read many books but that he probably would re-read this one.

I also read this book after I heard that King said he probably would re-read this one. It was pretty gut wrenching and I felt emotionally drained after reading it. I loved his style of writing, it kept me from wanting to speed read as I sometimes do. I wanted to savor every word and every nuance of the story. Best book I've read, other than King's, in many years.

Boy I didn't see the supernatural aspect coming at all. That ghost in the rain scene was incredibly well written.

When yall recommended it I knew it would be entertaining, I wasn't expecting it to be the great american novel. No wonder SK liked it.

Truly an awesome first novel!! Very well written. The author has a great 'voice'. Get the Kleenex box out tho when you get to the end!!

I agree, definitely get out the hanky for the ending. This novel answers the question "what if Stephen King had have written Ol Yeller?"

I guess I'm in the other camp on this one. I found it incredibly boring (maybe because I'm not a dog person). The ending was a complete downer. I loaned my copy to my daughter (who IS a dog person) and she didn't care much for it either.

Didn`t have to time to review this `till now:

I finished it a few weeks back.
TSOES is one THE most heartfelt, well written and warmest novels I have EVER read in my life.
It made easily my top ten list of all times, beating out many, many books that I thought were unbeatable.

And no, Jchanic, the story is not about dogs at all.
The story is about the human soul, about love and above all, about loyalty.
You don`t read this one, guys, you don`t know what a faboulus book you are missing out on.

I read this one last year and was amazed. It was such a rich tapestry of description and emotion.
