Found $200$ what to do? ;-)

ok here is the story--- Got new job and though i am not a church guy-- I do drop off $$ into the poor box and light candles say quick prayer for peeps. So i went to do so today, and found nicely folded $200 on the sidewalk where a gaggle of minivans where parked.

so i waited--than ran some errands than went back...

Should I donate it to the church, keep it, or what hmmmm

Well-- I decided that it was probably a harried mom going to the school (7 minivans) to help out and lost it while putting keys in the pocketbook etc.... So i called the school told them i found some valuables than told em cash- they said yah those are moms that come to help with the lunch that park there... I also asked them to touch base with the rectory (lady runs the rectory office is a nasty lunatic)

so i plan to hold it for a few weeks--than re-evaluate--but NO wAY am i spending or keeping a dime---

worst case I will donate it to the church if no owner is found

what would you have done? honestly?

You have a good plan there, rjt. Surely, considering the amount of cash, someone has to notice it missing and they would ask around at the school/ church. That could be someones pay for the week. If no one claims it, donation to the church or school sounds good. I like to think that is exactly what I would have done too.

I found some money once and handed it into the police station, they said if no~one claimed it after three months it would be mine.
Not that I would have wanted it. Luckily it was claimed. I would like to think others would be honest if I lost a large amount of money.

I believe I would keep it and consider it a blessing, I feel that things of this nature are not always by chance, like when I have lost money myself, I dont look for it, I know someone else found it, their blessing.

Might be somebody's grocery money or light bill money. Hold on to it, if no one claims it give it to the church. Just my humble opinion.

rjt- You are an exceptional person. I can't help to think of the loss that the owner of that fold of money is experiencing and their panic to retrace their steps in faint hope of retrieving it. You put out the word to the right people.

(By the by, you have to be a Dragon Lady to be the church secretary; she has to protect the Fathers, that's her main job. I did a stint as one, so I know.)

I remember reading a news story once, though I can't remember where, about a guy finding a large sum of money. He turned it in, which was a good thing because the money ended up belonging to someone on a fixed income and the lost money was for rent and groceries for the month. I remember a quote from the findee that the reward of knowing that someone had a roof over their head and food on their table for a month because he did the right thing was more than worth it.

with a large amount of money, i wouldn't feel right just keeping it.i would have to do as much as i could to get it back to its rightful owner. if it's only £10 or £20, i would be more inclined to just keep it & think of it as just a bit of good luck for me.
