Default Unintended Consequences by John Ross

I came across this pdf of the novel and decided to check it out. I will be ordering a few hardcovers! It is not an easy read, for a couple of reasons. It has many converging story lines that don't all link up until halfway through the book's 749 pages, but then it takes off like a rocket! A casual reader might be put off by that structure. Another reason is the bold sex, violence and racism portrayed through some characters. Rape and torture are included, but not gratuitously. If you have made it through SK's collective works, then you have already encountered worse than anything in Unintended Consequences. This is a history lesson on the past century, wrapped in a novel. There is much in this work that appears to be utter fantasy, but when one checks the outrageous anecdotes... well, truth is stranger than fiction, right?

To summarize, this story is of the 'gun culture'. If you have never fired a gun, but think you know what the 'gun culture' is, then you are in for a shock. I know people who are just like the characters in this story. They exist, all around you. It is my hope that people will read this novel and learn from it. The real historical settings are accurately documented, and the story has the potential to avert a civil war. Time is short, but there is still time...

Interesting. From your description I was expecting the theme to be anti gun-culture but from reading wiki I see that is not the case.

Thanks for the tip, I will be checking it out.

I didn't mean to be unclear, or even unbiased. The novel is, definitely, pro-gun as a central theme but is overall a pro-freedom story. Property rights, excessive governmental regulation, unrestrained bureaucracy and political corruption are all addressed with regard to groups such as FAA, Congress, EPA, BATFE etc. While there is plenty of gun-control propaganda from the antagonist side, it is mainly told from the viewpoint of 'gun culture' proponents.

For people who have had their opinion of firearms fed to them without the benefit of any actual experience with firearms, this is an eye-opener. For those who have an emotional aversion to firearms based on fear and the misapprehension that it is someone else's responsibility to protect them, this book will scare the hell out of them. The latter should avoid this book as it will only send them deeper into their psychosis.

For 'gun nuts', like me, this is a call to arms. A cautionary tale of the road we are on, the junction that we are fast approaching and the direction we need to be prepared to go. A civil war will harshly impact my sedentary lifestyle, so I would hope that everyone reads this and decides to err on the side of liberty and the Constitution. The alternative is too terrible to contemplate.

Truth is stranger than fiction, indeed. This could have come straight from the book! What else can be expected from a tax bureau that once classified a shoelace as a machinegun? Just another signpost along the road...
