I was thinking John Goodman would be a good choice given his stature, but maybe he's just a bit too nice (well, unless you've seen him in Barton Fink).
Hi,
I agree, I think a slight altering to the part he played in 'Oh Brother' would be perfect.
Long days and pleasant nights
Wendt would be a good Big Jim. For some reason IMDB doesn't have him listed for "King of the Ants," which was an unsettling but dang good flick.
Rent it.

Ned Beatty would be a good choice as well.
Of course, anyone fat and jolly that can also come off as alarmingly evil would fit the bill.
My vote goes to Stacy Keach. I had to Google "who played the warden on Prison Break" to find the actor's name, but I think he fits the look perfectly.
I was thinking of Brian Dennehy while reading the book.
I can't get Brian Dennehy out of my head for big jim. I've found him scarey since watching him play john watne gacy years ago.
Brian Cox - born to the role
Brian Cox would be awesome..I hadn't thought of that one. I too was also thinking of Brian Dennehy and John Goodman as I read the book as they are both very powerful actors and could pull off the role.
Another fabulous actor I was thinking of is Gene Hackman. I know he's not as physically big but he's more than got the acting chops for this role...just think of his sinister performance as Little Bill in Unforgiven.
