Default Has Anyone Read Hell House by Richard Matheson?

I'm looking for a good horror novel to pick up and I saw this one on Amazon for about ten dollars. I saw the 1973 film that was based on the book a couple years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm just not very familiar with Matheson's work. Most horror enthusiasts seem to concur that he is essential reading, however.

So, should I pick this up?

Hell you just convinced me to pick it up too.

I read I Am Legend because of SK's many references to Matheson as an inspiration. I love his elegant, sparse style.

Get it, it's a pretty good book, but I liked the movie better (but then I'm a big Roddy McDowell fan).
Besides, I believe Matheson wrote the movie's screenplay, so I think your a little more familiar than you may have thought.

Hell House was one of the scariest novels of its time back during the early seventies. That, along with The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, are a must for horror fans. So, yes, buy a nice copy of it for your collection.

Yes. Don't miss Matheson! And after you read Hell House, might I suggest you try I Am Legend and A Stir of Echoes. Both are classics among a great collection of works. See the bibliography here:

I haven't seen the movie, but I really liked Hell House. One of the best haunted house stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

You've done a rather thorough job of convincing me. I wound up placing an order for it (along with the audio book of UR). They are supposed to come in on Wednesday, which will be great. I'm leaving for a vacation on Thursday. Going to be camping in a two story cabin on a pond. Perfect atmosphere for a ghost story.

You might want to be sure to bring extra flashlight batteries, you know, just in case...and maybe some ear plugs.

Hey, now wait justa cotton picken' minute!
    You say your going camping?
What, your going to throw a tent up on floor of a two story cabin, and then what, open all the doors & windows?

"Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane - read this one yesterday. I don't mind a twist at the end, but I hate being lied to and jerked around.
