    Default My Father Taught Me...

To work hard. I was about 5 years old sitting on the floor playing. Daddy got home from work and sat at the counter talking to Momma. I remember very clearly when he said, "I'm not going to get paid this week for all the hours I put in." My Mom asked him why not and he said," My boss said it's against the law to work more than one hundred hours a week so everything over a hundred will go on to next week." I was little but remember thinking "One hundred, One hundred. That's a lot. 100 pennies would buy me 100 pieces of candy and gumballs," As I got older I realized how hard my Daddy worked for us. Never complained and always smiled when he was able to get us something.

thatīs a nice story...I like childhood stories. Did you ever tell him that? That you remember this situation and how you feel about it?

Yes Ma'm. Told my son, nieces, nephews Godchildren, too. That's what parents do and when you grow up you do for your own children.

I'm glad that you told him. He probably didn't think anything of it at the time, but it was a good lesson for you. I always wonder what kinds of things "stick" with my kids...

My dad worked for GM. Some day's he would work triple shifts because they were short on workers.(He was hardly ever home) He never complained, and we never lacked for anything either. Looking back, I would rather have had less and seen him more.

My dad turned down several good-paying jobs so we could live "at home" (i.e. not move) and have two parents (i.e. be a "normal" family). He could have been a very successful oilman, trucker, industrial painter, business owner ... but he was a very successful father instead. As kids we were teased terribly for being poor, wearing hand-me-downs, etc. ... but it was 150% worth it.

I know what you mean. I wish he would have been around more often and participated more in our growing up. However, my Daddy grew up dirt poor and he was determined to give us all the opportunities he never dreamed of. In my heart I know he meant well and had the best of intentions.
    Peace,

My dad taught me to trust my instincts, never sit with my back to the door and that it is possible to open a bottle of beer with your teeth.

My father taught me to believe in myself...

I was my father's girl through and through... he taught me how to swing a sledgehammer, and how to use tools to repair things...

he encouraged me to repair electronics when it was pretty much a male-dominated profession and he praised me when I chose a second career path later in life as a nurse...

he always offered logical advice when asked...

and we shared a love for the ocean, fireworks, cruising around, ice cream and playing cribbage together....

I learned more from him than anyone else ... and I sure do miss him....
