sony e-reader or amazon kindle? which one is better?![]()
you should wait for the notion ink
I have a kindle and love it. From my experiences trying other ereaders, here's what I like about the kindle:
- WRT the Nook, a bright light-up screen would be distracting to me when I'm reading. The whole point of eink is that it is not back lit, it looks like ink on paper.
- The light-up color screen seems to reduce the Nooks battery life. I can read for 2 weeks on the kindle (a few hours a day, wireless turned off) whereas people are reporting much less on the Nook.
- Tasks seem simple on the kindle - to bookmark a page, press Alt-B. On nook, press the button to wake up the color screen, scroll to selection for bookmark, select it. To look up the definition of a word on kindle, simply move (using the 5-way button) the cursor right in front of the word and the definition appears. On nook, press button to wake up color touch screen, scroll in menu to say you want to look up a word, a virtual 5-way controller appears, use this to highlight word... etc. Things just seem easy and simple on Kindle.
- Amazon customer service is amazing. They will bend over backwards to make you happy, and fix any problem you have with the kindle.
- I like that the kindle is thinner and lighter than nook.
- I actually like that the kindle doesn't have a touch screen like the sony because I wouldn't want fingerprints on my reading surface.
Hi,
Thankee for that, vermontcathy, very thorough.
My problem with the monochrome screen is that it can't do graphic novels convincingly, and graphic novels (or comics) must be the only current success story for publishers (hey, bookshops here are quiet and comic book stores are bulging at the seams!) and I think an e-book reader could be the perfect medium for them.
Long days and pleasant nights
It's true, if you want to read color comics or graphic novels, none of the e-ink devices (kindle, nook, sony) will work well for you. There are rumors of a color ereader by the end of 2010, but until then, you'd have to just read them on your computer or a slate/tablet computer such as the ipad or other brand.
Definetly the Kindle. The Nook is terrible. The kindle takes 5 seconds to start up, the Nook takes about 2 minutes. Plus, the Kindle has better battery life and has a better design. I'd spend the extra money and get the Kindle
They're the same price - $259. In fact, since you won't have to pay sales tax from Amazon (at least in most states) but do for Nook (in most states), Kindle is cheaper. Oh, one other thing is Amazon lets you return it within 30 days for full refund if you don't like it - no restocking fee. In fact, I think they'll even pay for the return shipping. Barnes & Noble charges a restocking fee on the Nook and you have less time, not sure how long.
I agree the kindle is better, I love mine, even if as I have said on here many times I have issues with the way amazon handles some of the big issues raised by e-books. However, Hansel, I have a terrible battery life on mine. Maybe it's because it was one of the first, but if I don't keep it on the charger, the battery goes dead in about ten hours.
Scarywriter- you may have a bad battery. I'm not sure how long mine lasts for but I would classify it in "days" not hours. Love the kindle. I'm an avid reader and may never buy an "analog" book again......
