As you were reading what went through your mind as to what the ending would be?
After the fire ball I thought ''Oh no everyone will die and the dome will remain''
I was pleasantly surprised at the end but I did wish more people survived.

I know what you mean, I wondered if maybe he was going to kill the whole town. That's one of the things I love about SK, he isn't afraid to write, 'and they didn't live happily ever after'!
The book moved at such a pace that I found I didn't have too much time to wonder how it would end, I was pulled along and couldn't put the damn thing down until I reached the end. And still after a thousand pages I found myself wanting more!
Also, I hate to admit it, but my hatred for Jim Rennie and wondering if and how he would get his just rewards occupied my thoughts more than the Dome lifting!!!
to be honest I thought the Dome would just disappear after the explosion and Rennie would survive and go to jail or something, But his ending was better.
Although I loved UTD, I loved the huge cast of characters, the good the bad and the ugly, and I love the bits and pieces from peoples backgrounds as it makes for a more complete picture of each character I thought the ending was weak. After all the book was a huge statement on the state of American politics. So after all the crooked town politicians, all the drug manufacturing all the meanness all the underhandedness all the us and them way the town got divided I was disappointed at alien children. I was hoping for it to be a government experiment. I could picture the dome lifting and people in an underground room at the Pentagon having a good laugh as they come up with a better plan for next time. So anyone with me or am I a little out there?
Early in the book I hoped that Dale and Big Jim would have some sort of showdown, but as I progressed, I didn't expect that to happen...Dale was fairly milquetoast.
I liked the idea of alien children. It lets us know that there are forces out there bigger than we are. And I liked King's ending; it's very typical of his endings. The dome disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Also, King sometimes leaves loose ends in his books. Not everything in life gets handled before the end. Sometimes life leaves us with a lot of loose ends.
Don't think i could ever wish to change anything that Stephen King has written. I suppose i wanted Barbie to wrestle the 'garage door opener' off of 'Chef', and save the town. I found it interesting to see how different people cope with pressure, it kind of brings out their true colours. King always has a 'good versus evil' vibe going on, and i think we all like to think that we would be one of the 'good guys', but who knows, we may decide to have abottle of wine and a long rest in the jacuzzi. Rose.
I really thought the entire town was going to perish, and I think would have been a more suitable ending.
I really thought there would be a death of the entire town. Then the dome would lift a day, month, year, whatever and a news crew would go through the town documenting the death and destruction. I think with something like the dome I would rather be left with the question of what formed the dome. Was it a government conspiracy, aliens, act of god, karma... who knows?
Early on in the book King tells us that only 26 people survive The Dome, one of them being Dale Barbara, so I knew it wasn't going to be a "everyone dies" type ending. As I read the final chapters, I kept a body count... or I suppose it was a survivor count, going trying to figure out who would make it and who wouldn't.
I was thinking that maybe it would just go away exactly one week after it was put in place. Or that the alien adults would see their kids messing with us and tell them to stop playing with the bugs and come to the dinner table... something like that.
I thought as the smoke was filling up the dome, Rennie was going to go completely bat s*** crazy, have almost everyone under his control, and have Barbie literally crucified and ready to burn him at the cross; and then some omnious sign like in Red State, the coming of the apocalypse to the religious crazy townfolk following Big Jim, would come in and cause them all to rejoice and praise Jim and God. Then just as Big Jim and his zealots were about to sacrifice Barbie for being somewhat of an Anti-Christ as Big Jim painted him to be, the Dome would fall in an act of god and the military would waste all the townsfolk.
The way King set it up with all the regligious dealings in the book, I was almost sure it would end this way.
