Dark Tower-writing time

I was wondering if someone knew how long it took Stephen King to write the whole Dark tower series.

I had read somewhere around 12 years (with many books written in between of course!)
My friend read that it took him less than a year but that the publishing was spread out.

Anyone has the answer?

They were written and published over a span of about 22 years. He wrote the last three sequentially and spent over a year on those but the others were published beginning in 1982. The Gunslinger was first published in installments in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1981 because Steve didn't think anyone would buy it as a book. Fortunately, Donald M. Grant convinced him otherwise.

the first book was published in 1978 and the last one in the series was published in 2004, but there is speculation that King will be starting a new book soon
