I do not understand the meaning of "Pete was sans camera;..." what does 'sans' mean?

Sans means without.

The usual use here in The U, S, and A is "Sans Souci," meaning "without (a) care." I remember several bars named that, and I'm sure I've been in others that I don't remember.

It rhymes with "sand soupy."
