It had to be one of the worst movie endings I've seen. I have the DVD, and I stop it as they pull away from the market. That matches the story more, and is a much better ending.

It was probably meant to be ironic and stir emotions in the viewer.
Haven't seen the big screen version...have you read the novella? Sometimes the movies your mind creates are so much better and allow better processing of plot and meaning. Plus as Mr. King has said more than once, everyone draws their own conclusions and sometimes sees meaning where there is none or comes up with something profound he'd never even considered. We "Constant Readers" are a breed apart! Glad to have you aboard "the board".
That's because it's not SK ending. The book ends very VERY differently. Don't want to spoil it for you - just go on and read it.
When I first saw the movie--when I passively went along for the ride--I hated the ending. I preferred the ambiguous (long) short story ending.
But it stuck with me...and when I actively thought about it, I understood that it was a Horror story, and it followed as a Horror Movie. Humpty-Dumpty couldn't be put back together again. The psychological Horror of the movie's abrupt ending was great.
I doubt I'll watch it again, though.

I liked the ending, and like Immoli I thought it was ironic. It seemed a nice touch of dark humour. I think even Stephen himself said though, if he re-wrote the ending that's probably how he'd do it. Though of course that's the thing when you see the film versions, you expect the exct story or of course theres that old feeling of it definetely will not be better than teh book
I loved the mist as a book & was very excited for the movie. even more excited that there was a black & white version on my DVD. Then I watched it. I was SICKENED by the ending. SICKENED. I had trouble sleeping that night.
The movie had a great b-movie, doesn't take itself too seriously feel to it. You know people were dying but it was done with light horror movie feel, if there is such a thing as a light death, but I don't know how else to explain it.
Then the "new ending" makes a complete 180 and goes to a place so unnecessary. We just watched this man protect the boy with every fiber of his being and then just gives up & does what he does. B*** S*** ! If Darabont was true to the charicter the boy would have to have been no-question-about-it mortal danger for his father to "take him out of the misery.". It was shock for shock's value, and not very good story telling. The book's end was perfect & lends itself to the intelligent viewer, those who don't need a "THE END."
I'm very suprised King let this happen.
I will never watch this again & to be honest it has turned me off to the story.
My 2 cents.
I own the movie and yes the ending is shocking, but I wasn't at all disappointed. And from several interviews I've seen With SK neither was he. Believe me it's a movie I can't watch that much, because the ending is gutwrenching, but that doesn't make it bad. It makes it hard to take.
