I would like to start by saying I like Stephen Kings work. I grew up watching him. The greatest. I recently purchased his new book Under The Dome and noticed that on page 107 there was an error. When he talks about lil Walter being retarded because of his mother smoking to much dope. It was printed in the book as smoking to much rope. I think he meant dope and not rope or maybe I am missing something. Please clarify. Ok back to reading the book again.

If you grew up "watching him" you're gonna love reading him. As for the rope/dope thing on page 107, perhaps "rope" is a slang for "dope" (one I haven't heard before, but I haven't heard everything) or maybe she really was smoking rope. That would certainly have some kind of effect on a developing fetus!

Well, I won't say for sure if it was a mis-print or intentional-but as an "old" guy, I will say that since hemp is a soft durable fabric made from plants of the Cannabis genus(marijuana), and that rope is also sometimes made from hemp-"rope" used to be a slang term for "weed". Like "Yeah man, let's go smoke some rope!" Not that I have ever had ANY such contact with said illegal plant in my mis-spent youth!

Rope is indeed a term used by some when referring to reefer. You see hemp, which is a plant in the marijuana family of plants, can be used to make a mighty fine rope.
Back in the days as far back as the founding fathers of North America (who grew and used copious amounts of hemp), smoking marijuana was often called "smoking rope."
Now days the term is not as widely used as the more popular terms like smoking a joint, spliff, bone, doobie and including the lesser known, dutchie. There are a myriad of different slang words which define marijuana, it's usage and paraphernalia.
So there you go, smoking dope = smoking rope.
