Just to get started, I'd like to tell everyone I'm a natural empath, and a wilder, like John Coffey. I'm a Reiki master (universal life energy--you can believe or not as you choose) and a holistic practitioner, trained in, of course, California.
My heart just went out to John Coffey. I've learned to create my space and block stuff out. He was much stronger than I am, and couldn't control it. Mr. King totally nailed the empath thing. I'm impressed. I don't read his horror stuff--my life scares me enough sometimes--but got interested in his other stuff when I read the Shawshank Redemption.
John Coffey didn't kill those kids, I knew that from the start. No one with that degree of empathy could have done something like that. I wasn't at all surprised when he said it was okay, he wanted to go at the end. In the end, he used the empathy to off the real killer. Percy, the guard, just couldn't deal with having that uncontrolled sensitivity to others. That's what drove him nuts. Can you imagine being an empath, and having that guy across the aisle from you, his thoughts intruding on yours, and you can't block it out.
Excellent job, John Coffey's empathic abilities, and the huge drawbacks there are to them.
