Default Thinking of giving it another go

OK.. So I read this book probably 20 years ago or more when a young teen and absolutely HATED it. I should add that at the time I was totally into hardcore sword and sorcery type stuff... a lifelong favorite that jumps to mind is Robert E. Howard's [B]Conan[B] stories. You know, real blood and guts good vs evil stuff. In other words physical might as opposed to what happened in this story. As I approach the end of the Dark Tower series I am starting to think it might warrant another look. I still have it packed away in pristine condition. I don't remember a great deal of the story, but am I correct in thinking that this might have been a sub-story, or if you like, a "twinner story" about the Stephen Deschain/Marten relationship that showed up later in DT? I think that Randall Flagg made his first(?) appearance here and Randall/Marten are the same person. Right? Thoughts please.

hi brandon. yeah, give it another go. i enjoyed the story. i dunno about your other questions. someone better versed in dark tower stuff can answer that. if not, seems i read something (here on the brd) like...yeah, okay, it's a kid of twinner story, that works. maybe the folk aren't exactly the same or whatever, but there's some cool things going on and it's worth a look see.

Flagg does show up and if memory serves, it was his 1st appearance that we, as readers in the REAL WORLD (does that exsist???) know of.

Who would read a story that they "absolutely hated", unless they has seriously masochistic tendencies?

Did it never cross your mind to just give up?

I disliked a lot of books (that I quit on) twenty years ago. Some of them I've recently enjoyed. Give it a shot. No harm, no foul.

Why not try? If worse comes to worst you can always put it aside again and wait another few years.

EOD is probably a top 5 King book for me. I'm currently finishing up my second reading of the DT and plan to re-read EOD again after that.

Definitely worth another try, I just finished it recently and really enjoyed it There are a lot of books I don't get on with one day, and then a year down the line I find I can't put them down. Funny how that works

I really liked Eyes of the Dragon. Not one of his best, obviously, but it was a fun, quick read. Awesome climax, too.

Pick it up and try again - the years may have changed the way you see things (I'm speaking from experience here!)...anyway, be aware that this book was written for his daughter, Naomi, and is something of a fairy tale. It's a great story though, and since you've read the Dark Tower series, you can look for a few things that showed up there too! Happy reading!!
