Hating the characters...

Ok....not saying I hate them all....but Sai King does it again...he manages to creat characters that you just can't help but hate....Big Jim Rennie, his son and his son's friends...I am just under 300 pgs into the book and I just want to punch them, or shoot them, or I find myself hoping that Barbie or someone will take care of them, or something.

SK is that awesome talent of creating characters you "love to hate." Like Percy in the Green Mile, the Sheriff in Desparation, the husband (can't remember his name) in Rose Madder. It's easy to create "good guys" but I have found (I like to write for fun) it's very, very hard to create a character that can really get under your skin. Probably what SK does (and I do too) is create hateful characters based upon real life people you've known like a mean coworker, etc. and give them a little extra "meaness."

I know this is kind of an older thread but I feel the exact same way. I'm about 700 pages in, and man I can't wait for Big Jim to get what's coming to him (he freakin better!). Normally there is a part of me that roots for the bad guy but in this story I just hate them so much I want them all to die. I can't even describe how frustrating it is "seeing" all the things that they get away with and knowing there's almost nothing that can be done to stop them.

My hats off to you Mr. King, it has been a long time since I've had such passionate feelings for characters as I do for those in Under the Dome.

A character I had quite an aversion for was Rachel's sister in Pet Sematary, and I hated the warden in Shawshank Redemption enough to wake up during night to hate him more.
