Default Current times references issues anyone?

Does anyone else has problems getting past "current times" references in King's latest works? Examples: Wolfe Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, 9-11? I get "stuck" when they are part of the story. The hardest for me are 9-11references, but I think that's because it still hurts too much. The current people/events references place the story in a definite time period, unlike earlier works. Just wondering what others think about this....

I know what you mean. 9/11 is still all too real. And when King has all these references, it almost seems to bring the story alive, all the more, which I know is obvious and exactly his point in putting them in their, but still.

And especially for our generation, its different reading older works that have references (do they? Idk if they ever did, I never remember them, but maybe its because they had little significance for me) is on a whole different level than when we see things that happened only less than 10 years ago. So yeah, I know what you're saying.

A lot of authors use time references. As a reader, I like it because it puts me exactly where and when in the story setting. Kind of like mental Todash!!

King has used these current references in almost ALL his books. That may be one of his trademarks.

He also mentioned Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie frolicking on some beach.

Sai King is all about entertainment...

Oh yeah, and the "soundtracks" to his books are also mostly up to date...

    Hi,

    Indeed.

Makes me wonder how they can shift the time-line of IT to the present day for the forthcoming movie.

Yep, its part of his gift. He has a good grasp of pop culture and lets it show in his work, its a big part of his charm for me.

I find it very interesting that when I read a book SK wrote 20 plus years ago I can put it into context of modern times.
In The Long Walk I pictured modern armored personnel carriers with M-16's with thermal sights.
I've found that many of his books do that and I enjoy it greatly.

The 9/11 references don't bother me so much as they make the story feel more real to this world, this level of the Tower so to speak. I think it works very well for the stories.
