Noob here. I just finished The Colorado Kid and in the Afterword, SK said that this story was inspired by a news clipping a friend gave him. He has since lost that clipping and couldn't find it on the internet. I just found an update of the story and how the case has been reopened. Very interesting. Here's the link:
