Thumbs up Stephen's Work Taught in School

My daughter is in the 8th grade and she came home yesterday to tell me that they are reading, "Cujo", in language arts. She said they have a whole section in their book regarding King's work. I told her I would be an excellent source to help her in this area! She is bringing her text book home today so I can see it for myself!

I was a little surprised that they are reading Steve's work and learning about him. I wish that I would have been given the opportunity when I was in school. It would have made English class much more entertaining! Do any of you have similar experiences with learning about King in a textbook/class?

Myself and my brother went to high school in Australia and I was very jealous when as part of the curriculum for my brother english class they had to read a Stephen King novel...he chose "Carrie" as it was the shortest lol! He was a couple of years ahead of me in school and unfortunately we were not given the same opportunity when I reached the same year

In my high school some English classes got to read Firestarter, but I didn't. I'm okay with that. I'd rather school open up doorways to me that I otherwise may have missed, rather than make me read my favorite author and a book that I was intending to anyway.

I imagine they're hoping they can get kids to read at all, if they present them with something more conventionally entertaining than the usual fare. Although Cujo is not really one of his best, in my opinion. It was probably chosen due to its lack of a super-natural theme (and the fact its relatively short). Plus some of his other books have some fairly explicit sexual content (not so much sexual acts, as just things people say, or think about), which would likely raise issues as well.

When my sister was in middle school she got to go to a writing seminar and Mr. King was one of the authors. She said it was great. I have always been jealous of that! Not because I am a writer but because I am a reader. This was way back in the 80's and I don't even remember where it was except it was in Kansas. Pratt or Hays I think.

That's awesome! I wish they would have tuaght about him when I was in school. I had to read his works on my own, which was cool with me.

No SK during my school years, however my son took an advanced English class and the teacher was really into SK- so yes- they read just about every book they could.

Our school district here requires Freshman to read "Carrie". Which is awesome. This is a new thing, when i graduated not to long ago it wasnt a required read.

No, my English lessons were full of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.
Luckily I enjoy those works also so I don't feel let down...I always had a King novel to read for pleasure.
