...that Australians, in a national referendum, voted to retain the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, as their Head Of State.

Couldn't you have gone one step further, guys, and actually invited her, and her cringeworthy dysfunctional family, along with all their various hangers-on, to move down there, so that she could have rewarded you properly for your show of allegiance?

The Royal Family are an obscene anachronism in a 21st Century democracy, where we elect a Government to rule our country. They are an institution which ties up billions of pounds of wealth in land and property, yet still receive ridiculous amounts of personal allowances which originate largely from the income tax payments of ordinary men and women, and which allows them to roam the world pursuing whatever pleasures and pastimes they wish.

I expect that there will now be a trickle of supporters and apologists demanding "off with his head", but hey, do I look bothered?

That referendum was the first time i ever voted...

I am not silly, I voted to kick the Royals out... What in the hell is the point of having the Queen as our head of sate when she has no idea what is going on over here....

Given the choice I would vote to kick them out again... and again until they are actually out!!

I think PM Kevin Rudd plans to get rid of the Queen, it is just a matter of when not if it happens....
