The Monster Words are the weak rationalizations that grown-ups tell children that everything will be fine--as Vic finds out too late.

I think the Monster Words are not symbolic, but ritualistic. Ritual is very important and is the basis of Magick as well as religion, because ritual speaks directly to the subconscious....where Fear lives.

When I was little, I was afraid of ghosts. My dad built me a "Ghost Getter:, which was a length of 2x4 about 16 " long, with the handle carved to fit my hand. The bottom was split so that when I smacked it, it made a great "WHACK!" noise. He told me to wait til the ghost was close enough, then whip the Ghost Getter from under the covers and whack him good.

Now, my Ghost Getter probably was symbolic of the strength and power kids dont have on their own. But, I think the MW are ritualistic.more than symbolic. But, whadowino?

I suppose the Monster Words are symbolic in the same way a totem is symbolic. It has whatever power you believe it has. Superstition isn't so much about warding off evil as it is about moving your mind on to something else. All the while you're being careful not to step on a crack for fear of breaking your mother's back, you're likely not thinking about all the very real dangers around you (and her) . . . which makes you feel safer, even though you really aren't.
