Brett Favre was the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, an American football team in the NFL, for many years. He was then traded to the New York Jets, retired, came out of retirement and played for the Minnesota Vikings. Conicidentally, he is commonly referred to as "the old gunslinger" for his style of play. If you do a search for his images, you may find he looks the part and if you can find him talking in a commercial, you may see what I mean regarding my perceived similarities between the him and Roland.

I actually made the following fantasy cast list last night:
Roland

Dennis Quaid, so long as you could keep him from grinning like an idiot like he seems prone to do. Has dark hair, blue eyes, and looks especially rugged when he's sporting a 5 o'clock shadow. Plus he has the deep voice needed that other possibles like Hugh Laurie and Viggo Mortensen sort of lack.

Eddie

Jake Gyllenghaal. The pic is just an example of him with shaggy hair, though he'd need to wear hazel green contacts.

Susannah

Jada Pinkett looks the part to me and I think she could pull off a Detta pretty well.

Jake
I think Jake's actor doesn't need to be famous. Any young teenage boy with sandy blond hair and blue eyes could fill the role.


I also had some ideas for some of the more minor characters.
Walter
I can't think of anyone who could possibly be better than Willem Dafoe. As Randall Flagg though they might want to have a different actor.

Callahan
James Cromwell. What can I say? They did a good job casting him in 'Salem's Lot.

Mia

Claire Forlani. She has the face, hair, body. I think she could pull off the "innocent" look better than someone like Angelina Jolie for instance.

Eldred Jonas

Sam Elliott. Nuff Said.

Now see I would have cast Sam as Roland and definitely Shia as Eddie.

Ok, I can agree somewhat with Viggo, but the rest... not so much, escpecially Rosario Dawson and Max Records. Shia is ok.

My personel thought about the movie, is DON'T MAKE IT! I don't want to even see a commercial of it, if they make one.

I just don't see how this could be done. Not in a movie or even 12. It's just too much. Look at "Stand By Me". A great adaptation of one of Steve's stories, but still had to have certain things cut from the movie for whatever reason. The point is that is a fairly short story and it made a full blown movie that still had to be truncated. Translating the DT over would be a mind-numbingly complex undertaking that would frankly probably piss most real fans off anyway. I would love it if it was done accurately and stayed true to the story, but don't see anyway to do it except a very long animated/CGI series. Maybe an HBO recurring series. Even in that format, it would take YEARS to tell it properly. If I was Steve, I would simply be too protective of that particular story to let it be done with nothing more than "best effort".

I dont understand all the moaning about a translation to film. If a passionate extreamly talented crew get it together it could be better than LOTR. Maybe 2 versions could exist, tv series an film. I read the Lost guys are not doin it, but they could still help out. This film NEEDS to be made before we lose the fire. lol (sorry about the lol) Stand an be true!
