One can only guess of course. I think you already said it. He is Brilliant! And truly Brilliant people don't need pretensions. SK is not pretentious. I listened to his commentary on The Shining and he spoke continuously without the pregnant pauses (which some celebrities affect to make them seem more intelligent than they really are ) which are so irritating. He speaks that way because he can't be bothered about how he might sound. He just wants to communicate. His books communicate in the same manner. He can swear in one line and be poetic in the next with the same ease. He can be Joe the truck driver and Plato without missing a bit. Serious and hilarious the same way. So no pretensions.

I think a lot of it had to do with his father walking out on the family and he grew up with his mother working 2 jobs. Plus in college she would go with out food to send him some money. He worked hard to get money for her, its just too bad she died just before he hit it big with Carrie.

He is definitely brilliant. But I think I most relate to SK because he almost always uses a theme song or just different songs to go along with the story. How often does a song come on (either your radio, tv, or just happens to be playing somewhere) and it totally relates to your life at the moment?

My best guess is "What if?" I think he runs entirely on that question.

Work ethic + dark imagination + writing talent = Stephen King
Take away any of these three things and you get someone else.
