Very creepy. All the posts in this thread sum up my thoughts to a tee. I wonder if King had a certain inspiration to write such a powerful story. Just doing research on the camps and the tortures to know what he was talking about must have been a grueling undertaking. Certainly cant type cast King to the boogeyman genre. I havent read the Breathing Method yet but all the other stories in Different Seasons could actually happen. That sends chills up my spine in a way his boogeyman stories cant do. Real life can be scary as hell too.

Truly harrowing and disturbing. In many ways it's a tragedy too, Todd's switch just flipped, a bright future darkened throughout the story I kept saying to myself 'come on Todd, snap outta it, look at your future, don't throw it away, just walk away..... it didn't work

This in the whole is a fine piece of literature... unsettling, but very fine.

Yeah, this one is pretty hardcore. It disturbed me, but I liked the fact that it disturbed me. Classic vintage King, and easily the most effective story he wrote.
I've seen Bryan Singer's movie, and while it was quite well cast, the ending was changed and I remember being almost outraged about that. Reading an interview with Singer he said "I just couldn't do that ending justice". I thought "Well, should've let a film-maker with some guts have a crack at it".

I'm friends with a guy who was a fairly well known child actor back in the day - and was actually in a very popular movie (out of respect to our friendship however, names will not be mentioned, but you'd know the guy). It was his dream to play Todd in an Apt Pupil movie. He hasn't been able to bring himself to watch the Singer version. When I told him about how it ended, he was disgusted. He really thought that role should've been rightfully his.
