    Default First Rated R

Cujo was the first Rated R movie that I was officially allowed to see by my parents. They also had watched a couple in the drive-in (Halloween and Texas Chainsaw are two I remember), but I was supposed to be asleep in the backseat...heh heh. No wonder I turned out to be such a horror buff...

...anyway, I'm not sure why they decided Cujo was mild enough for me (I was pretty young when it came out), but because I was so young, it was REALLY impressive to me. I've tried to enjoy it years later a couple of times, but it just doesn't hold the same impact...nowadays the kid being terrified in his bedroom (remember the "Monster Rules"?) is spookier to me than the dog.

My favorite memory from the film is the guy on the cereal commercial, "Nope. Nothing wrong HERE." LOL What a goofy ad campaign.

Live, love, laugh & be happy,
    Smikes

I know what you mean about not being as scared now. Come to think of it, I wasn't really scared then either. I would only scream because my mom would scream. Still a good memory of growing up. She also took me to see Psycho when I was young and I still check behind the curtain (I think a lot of people do). I let my kids watch inappropriate movies because she did and I'm ok. My boys are currently obsessed with Chucky (more funny than scary). They don't have the attention span to actually sit through Cujo yet, but when they do, its definitely on.

The first "scary" movie I watched was Poltergeist aged four!
Even now it still chills me when I see Carol~Anne kneeling in front of the TV static...They're Here!
When you hear her voice coming from the TV looking for her Mommy spooks me too. Wow, I really need to watch this again soon.

I actually didn't see Cujo until after I had already read the book. Truth is, the only King movies I remember seeing before having read the books are Misery (read it a few years later) and Thinner (never read it).

The first R-rated movies that I received permission to watch, by the way, were Jason Lives and Halloween 4. To put this in perspective, I was born back in 1980.

You know, I was very surprised at the lack of gore in this film. I'm not a huge fan of gory films, since I believe that gore does not represent fear in any way, but simply disgust. I just expected this film to be a lot bloodier. The goriest scene was probably when Joe Camber fights Gary dead with his throat torn out. To be honest though, I was dissapointed that they didn't show Joe Camber's death, after all, I thought it was actually kind of funny in the book.
