Excellent movie but very very strong meat. Watch with extreme caution.
It's pretty darn near a masterpiece. Helen Mirren is flawless as the thief's wife. All of Peter Greenaway's movies are worth seeing.
My husband took me to the Angelika Theater in the city to watch this nearly 20 years ago and while I thoroughly relished this bizarre fare, my husband was not too crazy about. Call me weird....
The Angelika has been replaced as the movie house to go to for independant films since The Sunshine Theater opened (it's on Houston near Eldridge). The subways rumbling under the Angelica and the seats that haven't been replaced since, well, probably ever, plus the so-so sound etc...make the Sunshine a much better place to go. I do have fond memories of seeing loads of great stuff there (at Angelica), back in the daythough. Cheers!
Wow! That brings back some memories. Although quiet nasty ones. I think I saw that one a little too young. Wasn't that one of the first NC17 movies. (after Scandal)

The first movie that came out with NC17 rating is Showgirls. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover is also available with an R rating if anyone is interested.
Damn, I forgot about Henry and June. *That* was the first one in 1990. -Steamy stuff at the time.
