Default Burn Her At The Stake...

There is apparently a new autobiographical book by Matt Latimer, who used to be a speech writer for President George Bush Jnr. In it he reveals that JK Rowling was being considered for the USA's highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

According to Latimer, JK was denied the award by the Bush administration because they feared that the Harry Potter novels "encouraged witchcraft"!

Damn, what must that government have thought of some of SK's work?

"Burn Her At the Stake..." is a bit over the top for a title. As you may know, the late Senator Edward Kennedy was awarded the Presidental Medal of Freedom by President Obama on August 12th. Who made the graver error?

I love Harry Potter but I don't think JK Rowling met the criteria:
    Presidential Medal of Freedom

Eligibility: Awarded by the President for exceptionally meritorious contributions to national security interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other exceptionally significant public or private endeavors. It is bestowed at the sole discretion of the President. The basis for nomination must be of the most significant nature to the nation as a whole.
Criteria: Established by Executive Order 9586, "Medal of Freedom," July 6, 1945, as amended.

Process: Heads of DoD components or officials of the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the level of Assistant Secretary or above shall submit nominations with full justification to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Force Management & Policy) (ASD(FM&P)) who will recommend to the Secretary whether the nomination should be referred to the President. ASD(FM&P) maintains records on all recommendations and their disposition.

    (Version 2, 1 Jul 96) Updated on April 20, 1998

Of course the last part of the criteria is a point of contention.

I recently heard a story about a Vietnam vet who was awarded the "Silver Cross" I think it was?! It only took them 40 years to recognize his contribution. I don't hold much stock in goverment issued awards. With the Feds it just all posturing and PR moves. Everyone in Washington is terrified to say what they realy think or feel. Can't offend any voters!!

I agree. The only thanks I wanted when I was in the military were those coming from other Marines and the people I helped directly. That means more to me than a piece of brass or a ribbon any day of the week.
