    Default Suggestion

I first read the stand when it came out in the 70s - became my favorite book and that hasn't changed over the years...
I remember reading an article years ago where SK said that people would come up to him and ask him how where Frannie and Stu ended up and how they were doing. He thought it was funny that people assumed he kept track of them - they were fictional characters...
However, it being 30 years later now, I'm wondering if he would consider a sequel. I know it would be nearly impossible to equal the original, but dang if I don't want to know what happened to everyone, too!

I think that it is always a difficult one I think. You want to know what happens to the characters after a book has finished but, what sort of book would it make really?

Frannie contracted a rather bad case of Ringworm & we almost lost her due to a complication from an Overactingectomy,
"Oh Stu...I love you Stu... Is the baby all right Stu?... Does it have the flu Stu?... Can you Boogaloo Stu?...Oh Boo-Hoo Stu!...I love you true too! Blubber-Blubber snort-snort snorkle-snorkle"
Stu lost both his legs in The Nam & was becoming an alcoholic but he found work on a shrimp boat with some retarded guy & learned to swim real good... he had a chance to go to the moon but his flu came back & he had to take a desk job.
    He works for CSI now!

    Thumbs down Re: Suggestion

Although The Stand is my favorite SK, I think I am happy with the extended book. A sequel rarely lives up to what you want from it. I don't want Stu and Frannie re living their glory days all the time, or people to have gotten righteous, or worse still. boring. No always leave the punters wanting more!

Me, being a hardcore Stand-fan, am shocked and appalled that I never even considered the possibility of a sequel. If he writes it, I will read it, and if he doesn't, I will still love and adore his masterpiece.

No sequel!!!...if anything from what I heard The Dark Tower could be considered a sequel. However if he tells us what happens to Frannie and Stu then that would ruin it. The point is he lets YOU imagine what happened to them. YOU put your own ending on it. The reason Stephen King did not tell us what happened to them is because he understands that it would be overkill. It would be suppressing the reader's imagination at that point where his goal is to expand it. His story laid down everything he needed to after that you are supposed to plug in the holes yourself. It makes for a better story because you shed your own imagination into it rather than reading somebody elses.

I feel that this story is epic enough. I mean, really - just the shear wight of it is enough to make it useful as weapon. But then again, I thought that The Talisman was jst the ending I wanted and still enjoyed Black House so... Who knows?

I don't think a sequel would work as there wouldn't be an antagonist as ruthless as Randall Flagg.

Lets be honest. I like the book but a sequel would consist of what? Hey got the sewer system up and running. Whoa we now have a party line on the telephone. So should we bring the Republicans and Democrats back?

It just wouldn't have the same zip.
