Default A recommendation for all Gaiman lovers (possible spoilers)

Or for those just getting into his works.

Rather than individually recommend this series to different people, I figured I'd do it this way. Ladies and gentlemen, this is about... The Sandman

Sandman is a comic series published by Vertigo, a division of DC which releases comics made for mature audiences. The original series ran for at least six or seven years, starting from 1989. It spawned many spinoffs, and gained a following shortly after the release of the first storyline collection (Preludes and Nocturnes)

The Sandman of the title is Morpheus, the personification of dreams. He is one of the Endless, a family of personifications that have lasted since before the Creation and will last after the end of mankind. Individually, from eldest to youngest, they are: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire and Despair (twins), and Delirium. These characters and many others in the series are considered gods in certain cultures (examples of the others: the Norse gods Odin, Thor, and Loki, the Egyptian goddess Bast, the demon Azazel)

The timeline of the series is not exactly in order with ours. There are stories that take place decades, centuries, even millennia ago. For example: In the third collection, Dream Country, which consists of four individual tales, there is a story entitled "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Before you ask, yes, this has to do with Shakespeare. He is, in fact, one of the characters in the story. This tale (set in Elizabethean times) has to do with the Bard giving a special presentation of his play to Dream and every magical and mythical creature you can (and can't) think of: wood nymphs, fairies, trolls, and so on

I think I've gone on long enough. If this sounds interesting to you, whether you've read all of Gaiman's books already or haven't even thought about picking one up, be my guest to start reading...and welcome to the Dreaming

Could not agree more; thanks Jack!
This is a beautiful, multilayered collection of work that deserves all the praise (and readers) it can get. My only regret was coming to the end of it--and there are one-shots available, as well. My favorite character, after Dream, is his little sister, Death.

Death is actually older than Dream. He's just taller than her. It happens

The Sandman is great fun to read.

If you like short stories, you should try Smoke and Mirrors. I think my favorites in that book were the one about the Black Cat and the eerie squamousness of Snow, Glass, Apple. American Gods is a lot of fun, too.

I always hesitate to give book recommendations because I read so much from every genre, fiction or non-fiction, that I don't really have a "vibe" for what makes the readers who have more specific taste tick. Know what I mean?

Ok. Doing a reread of the series while waiting for my library to get volume 10 (I've had it on hold for the longest time) and also reading some spinoffs, and can I just say:

The manga Death: At Death's Door is so freakin cute!!

I just received 5 and 6 today. This is simply the finest fantasy series ever written. DT pales in comparison.

    Sorry, please don't kill me!
