Yep....I agree....SCano....I didnt fancy this part of Uncle Steves writing at all....mid life stuff,I thought. But the writing was excellent,as usual. I did not fancy it much, though.
Noonan's character was "meh" at best. In all actuality, I felt the main character in Death at the Gotham Cafe to be much more... kick-ass, I guess you could say.
However, what made me dislike him so much was the fact that although he missed his wife and wanted nothing more than to have her back in his life, he almost all but completely forgot her once the pretty young blonde mother (who screams "damsel in distress" better than anyone) came into the picture. Then it seemed all he did was have wet dreams about the three women who plagued his thoughts. It just made it so comical.
that has to be one of the best critiques of bag of bones i've read.

I agree, the story-telling was some of his finest. Loved it very much. The story also disturbed me very much....
I didn't have too much of a problem with Mike Noonan-my biggest problem was Mattie. She seemed too wishy washy. Kind of phony. The effort it took to make her look angelic and squeaky clean felt so forced to me. At every turn we're reminded of just how awesome she is. I don't like or trust unflawed characters. Her character reminds me of those political commercials you see around election time. It's shoved down our throats how "good" she is and then you get to the point to where you want to puke every time you see their mug on the t.v. It's like, "I get it! Enough already!"
