Default italian reading SK in english

Hi everyone!! i am brand new and trying to make this work!
well, i am italian and have been a fan since 1978. at the beginning i was reading The King translated in italian, then 12 years ago, i ended up in england for 5 years and started my visits to the library.
clearly, not much Stephen king in italian over there , and that s when i started to read him in english.
i think he s one of the best and hardest writer to read in a language that is not yours, of course, a lot of slang and a lot of pure Americana references, but wow did he teach me!!
so thank you Mr King, i am for sure a better english reader, writer and speaker now that i could ever have been.
so my question to the board is : is it there anyone who had my same experience?
thank you to john danglish and hunted who welcomed me, and someone else i don t remember, sorry, i was stuck with this system and couldn t answer.
    but here i am now!
    ciao!

    I'm glad you did it..
I myself live in Belgium, and I was born and raised talking, reading and writing Dutch.
I never lived anywhere else, but I developed a real love for the english language and culture, so the step to reading, writing and talking in English was soon to be taken.

Now I love reading in English, I even prefer it over Dutch. Personally I think King is quite easy when you get a hang of that slang, like you say.. And I love learning new words..
Keep reading them and of course post what you think of them..
    Welcome!

    Welcome to the board!
I want to say that I have the same experience as you have! I live in Russia and english is my second language. But I do love english, even more that russian or any other language. And it was a kind of dream for me to read Stephen King's books in the original but first it was very hard! His language is really very difficult, but that's good because to my mind it's never interesting to read easy books, right?
So, King is for sure one of the best writers of our time. And he teaches me, too!
So, welcome again! Enjoy being here and keep posting!

    Welcome to the board!

I'm from Norway and naturally started to read King in norwegian. But after 3 books, I heard about the Dark Tower series and I really wanted to read that. It hadn't been translated to norwegian at the time, so I decided to take a shot and read it in english. I thought it was a little hard the first couple of pages, but by the time I had finished the foreword, I completely forgot that I was reading another language.

I've learned most of my english through games and movies (beside school), but I didn't think it was any problem. A couple of slangs here and there and some strange words I didn't know the meaning to (but I understood the sentence anyway), yes - but not enough to throw me off the hook.

I've read 18 books in english (and most of Different Seasons and Skeleton Crew) by King so far and by now, I wouldn't read it in norwegian even if I could. A translation can't compete with reading something in its original language anyway. It's like watching a dubbed movie. I'd never watch Tom Hanks talking with some norwegian actor's voice.

That`s always like that when you read the originals and English is not your first language.

For instance, Dostoyevsky is very hard to read and understand in English, a lot of the real meaning gets somehow lost in the translations, but if your Russian, or at least you know Russian perfectly, his works are simply beautiful.
