King is a religious enough guy, and religion permeates a lot of his work. The way I see it is as such, Mr. King writes works of fiction, whenever he dwells on the Judeo-Christian stuff, I just take it as an extended part of the make believe of his stories. I won't complain about reading of thinnies, vampires, ghouls and werewolves so why would I make a fuss about some religious stuff.
On another note, Desperation was my very first King novel, and as a boy of 12-14 I remember lapping it up at the time, and once I get through the dozens of books of his I've never read I'll revisit this one.
