i'm halfway through 'the gunslinger' and there was a scene where i was a bit confused over what happened, wondered if someone could clear it up for me. i mean, i have an inkling, but i'm not sure.
when he's in tull and he visits i think her name was miss pittston? the evangelist who called him the antichrist. he said he'd destroy her baby. it says he held her thighs and pushed the gun against her. then it doesn't mention any gunshots or anything, and the wording is a bit vague...i'm thinking perhaps because it's a pretty awful thing to put into words? or am i getting this all wrong? what exactly did he do to her? also...the idea i have in my head about this is such that i don't know how she wouldn't have died from it too. so i'm probably getting it wrong.
whatever he did, (an abortion?) it didn't work, as she rallied the troops once they set up to do what was bid of them. i particularly liked the use of the word, "bewildered" to describe the good folk of tull once the guns started blazing, "bewildered" before silvia rallied them. in the end we're all bewildered...and connected...but that's half the battle, no, deciding the how and why and the where of the connections?
I was never under the impression that he actually fired the gun so I just quickly had a re-read, I'm stil not entirely sure what happens as the wording is very vague but I think it was either one of two things...
Either he enduces some sort of miscarriage or she never really was pregnant and it was just a trick left by the man in black, as before he leaves Roland says to her "No child, no angel, no demon", so maybe he knew that, I'm thinking that is more likely.
