It's absolutely captivating, scary as hell, and one of my favorites.

The first time I read that passage I slammed the book shut and started cussing.
C'mon folks, it just doesn't get better that this.
Slammed the book shut and started cursing?

I bid well done to those of you who re-read it. I don't think I'd have the guts to go through that again. Some scary stuff. Up there with my faves. Did he really write that before his accident? I do recall that TR90 was a super dangerous road to cross.

It was a good story-and for me at the time, an unexpected turn for the Inkslinger-or so I thought. Normally, a book of this nature wouldn't appeal to me-but he did it so well, I've gone back to it several times over the years. Again, strength of characters sucks me in and takes me on the ride!

The old lady and I just finished it. First time for her, second for me. As usual, my senile @ss had forgotten the whole thing. When I got to Mattie's death, I turned to her and said "hell I didn't remember this ending badly; bummer!".
She looked at me in disbelief. "It didn't end bad."
    "The girl died!", I said.
"He was too old for that girl!", she says, as if it would have been wrong for Mike and Mattie to hook up and I was a horny old goat for even wanting them to.
"well she didn't have to die!", I said, lamely, knowing I'd lost another argument.

When I was reading the book I was thinking about Matthew Perry from Friends as Mike. I just pictured him as the character somehow.
