Default Rate my King Book Haul

Thrift stores are great for picking up a bevy of King books. Today, we were at three different thrift stores trying to find a computer desk for me and I saw the following (though only purchased the bolded):

    • Different Seasons
    • Nightmares & Dreamscapes
    • Rose Madder
    • The Talisman
    • The Dark Half
    • Insomnia
    • The Gunslinger (Illustrated Paperback)
    • The Green Mile (Parts 2, 5 & 6)

Also, interestingly enough, seeing as I got The Talisman, I found Peter Straub's Ghost Story, which I actually currently have checked out from the public library. Thought I'd get it so I could read it on my own time (the copy from the library is currently overdue).

Would have picked up The Dark Half and Insomnia if I hadn't already read Insomnia and was waiting for all memories of the film version of The Dark Half to leave my head so I can go into the novel as if I was not familiar with the work at all. The Gunslinger's illustrations underwhelmed me; I loved the illustrated version of The Dark Tower, and the ones there fell short. And the person that seemingly chose three parts of The Green Mile at random to give to a thrift store needs slapped.

But I guess I broke my own, "Already read/seen it," rule with the first two books (Nightmares & Dreamscapes and Different Seasons). But I haven't read Nightmares & Dreamscapes in ages and I've only seen the film versions of the Different Seasons novellas, and even that was a long time ago.

All told, I have the following King novels yet to read at my disposal: Christine, Rose Madder and The Talisman. Which should I read first whenever I get around to them? I'm thinking Rose Madder because I started reading that last year and was loving it, but just didn't have the time to keep reading it and never finished the book.

I suggest you read Rose Madder and go from there.

I started off by "Just Reading" Stephen King books, and then came a point when I simply had to own them -read them or not - and then came the latest point of rereading them over and over again. It's not all of them all the time, but some of my favorites The Stand, It, Salem's Lot, Wolves of the Calla I must have read over 10 times each.

You should deffinatly go back to the book you started. How can you stop reading a book you enjoy in the middle of it? Do, teach me. When I'm enjoying a book I'll read at while I'm working, while I'm walking in the street, in the shower, on my stationary bicycle, you name it. I was sent home from a shift at work as a student for reading a Stephen King book and spent many detentions for reading books in class as a child.

Stop in the middle of a book? I'd settle for being able to put it down for a minute!

I love to shop at thrift stores! You just never know what you're going to find at them. Here's just some of the SK books I've picked up: a SIGNED mint hardback of Insomnia (how this ever made it to a thrift store I couldn't begin to tell you, and yes, it IS his true signature), a second printing of the Donald Grant edition of the Gunslinger (ex-library in wonderful shape!), 1st Printing hardback of The Bachman Books, 1st Grant edition of The Drawing of the Three and I didn't pay over $3.99 for any of them! Gotta love the thrift stores! Keep on shopping!

WOW. KingRiceFan, you have scored! I should learn to keep my eyes open a little better when I'm shopping.

And I was shocked to see the illustrated version of The Gunslinger. If I had seen any of those at the thrift stores, kingricefan, I don't know what I would've done. Probably looked around to make sure no one else dared have their eyes on it, then put it inside my shirt and walk covertly to the register.

I would say that is a damn solid run of finding King books at the thrift stores.

I suggest you put your computer desk together and start reading.

I totally agree.. I find it so hard to put down a book that i'm right into. I'm forever getting in trouble for reading when there's other things to be done.
